How to convert a video to WebM

Open your video, choose WebM in the Format list and press Export. WebM output depends on your browser's encoders: Clipvexa checks them and greys out WebM with a note when it is not available.

When WebM makes sense

WebM is a good choice for video that will be played on web pages. For sharing with apps and devices that expect a classic file, MP4 is usually safer. Our MP4 vs WebM guide compares them.

Limits

  • WebM output is verified in Chromium, Firefox and the WebKit engine; it still depends on the encoders of the browser you use.
  • If the browser cannot encode Opus, the WebM is exported without audio and you are told.
  • Large files are limited to 120 MB in browsers that cannot save directly to disk.

Frequently asked questions

Why is WebM greyed out in my browser?

Because the browser cannot encode VP9 or VP8 video. Clipvexa checks this on your device instead of letting the export fail.

Does WebM keep the audio?

Yes, as Opus, when your browser can encode it.
