Video resolution for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts

All three formats are built around vertical video. The practical target is a 9:16 picture at 1080×1920.

The short answer

Use a vertical 9:16 video at 1080×1920 pixels. That is the size TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts each recommend for vertical video. Platforms re-encode what you upload, and rules such as maximum length or file size change over time, so check the platform's current help page before publishing.

What if my video is horizontal?

A 16:9 landscape video does not fill a vertical screen: the app adds bars or crops it. Reframing a landscape video into portrait needs cropping, which Clipvexa does not do. When you can, record in portrait from the start.

Reducing size without ruining the picture

  • Do not upscale. A 720×1280 clip stretched to 1080×1920 gains no detail.
  • If a file is too large, lower the resolution to 720p (720×1280 for vertical video) and choose the balanced quality setting.
  • Trim dead seconds at the start and end first: a shorter clip is a smaller file.

Doing it in Clipvexa

Open the clip, pick a resolution (for a vertical video the list shows sizes such as 720×1280 and 480×854), trim it, and export an MP4 (H.264 + AAC), which every one of these platforms accepts. Your file is processed on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1080×1920 the same for all three platforms?

Each platform recommends vertical 9:16 video at 1080×1920. Their limits for length and file size differ and change, so check each platform's help pages.

Does Clipvexa crop to 9:16?

No. It keeps the original proportions and lowers the resolution. For portrait results, start from a portrait video.
